Clearly the universe is suggesting I shouldn't get...
This week:
I got to go to the Eater Awards at the Dream Hotel on the lower west side, mingle with fancy chefs, eat delicious food, and drink delicious drinks. It was a fabulous party.
A particularly flattering picture of myself and my boss with said fancy chefs made it onto Eater’s press coverage of the event.
I got the press copy of a very supportive article on my organization that...

My chest was bursting as I walked home from the subway today. Really it had started on the train. A train of thought which I could trace back for you: A teenage boy mentioned turkey dumplings, I started to think about Thanksgiving, I wondered what if any my family traditions were, I thought about a question I had been asked recently about what my “last supper” would be which had...

This is an opinion not grounded in scientific...
I distinctly remember going to the train, getting onto the train, sitting on the train.
I took out the New York Times magazine that I hadn’t received on Sunday. Or at least that’s what I told the New York Times. In fact, it had been a mistake based on an oversight. I was not trying to cheat the New York Times.
I read a story about a man who left his former job as a CFO of some...

I took a tepid bath in shallow water to cool off. To scrub the thickness and dirt off of my feet. To wash the sweat away. Just to do something. I position my electronics close to the water, on the edge of the tub. Wipe off a finger each time the movie stops, on to the next free clip. I stare at my naked body and think how strange it is. Pull up my hair to wash my back. Sitting is not a flattering...

Kurt Vonnegut, forward to the NY Environment book
“I ask myself, “Why has a book about New York City this basic never existed before?” It is as though only now somebody
got around to wondering and then describing how the insides of an animal’s body worked. Only now do we have this
physiology of the enormous creature millions of us inhabit, for better or worse, as though we were tiny, unthinking
parasites. If the creature sickens, then we...

Shared Bounty, a conversation on local food,...
In conjunction with their Department of Food Studies the New School sponsored the Shared Bounty event-a discussion on local agriculture and the means by which it can connect to urban buyers. The panels were split between two of the largest looming topics in any serious discussion of food: infrastructure and marketing. The panel on Distribution, Wholesale, and Infrastructure was moderated by...

Your Nutritionista: Don't Bring Me to the Gym →
Wow, this is some of the deepest nonsense I have read in a long time. The people who write these articles (are we shocked its from Fox though? Not really..) must have the most awful boyfriends/girlfriends/significant others. My boyfriend and I go to the gym together all the time, he’s not “bringing me to his gym”, we both go to the gym. We don’t need separate gyms to work...

Active 2, Kinect
Ross and I are technology people. Well mostly, Ross is technology people, but you know I’m lumped in there by default. Awhile ago we got “Active 2”, which is one of the newer work out games for the Kinect (XBox360). I love the idea of work out games, but I never seem to stick with it. Today I decided to break out the Active 2 and see if I liked it. The workout is a lot more...
12 hours later..
I think 12-16 is the approximate minimum amount of time I need to write a paper. Have about a paragraph to go on the 10 page paper I started this morning….but I feel like I could use at least 8 more hours of procrastinating. Needless to say, I need a LOT of short breaks. So far I have watched a lot of hockey, browsed etsy, been on twitter more than is healthy, and ordered food once. Maybe...
Hunkering down
During grad school, Saturday has often been the day when I hunker down at our dining room table and try to catch up on the week’s work. Weekdays I have to go to work during the day and am often unproductive at night, so Saturdays are a chance for me to catch up. I’m optimistic today because even though I slept in (really slept in too) it looks sunny enough to keep me from feeling like...

After an amazing night of (free!) burlesque and drinks (some of which were also free!), this is some of what resulted.

I was raised to be a fighter and a lover. I inherited so many things for which I am grateful. My father’s strength and shrewdness, my mother’s desire to help and nurture, the matter-of-factness of my Grandma Elizabeth and the steely exterior of my Grandma Barbara’s plastic surgery facade. I have been given the fragility that allows me to love and be loved, I have been given the...

I’m trying to be brave because when I’m brave other people feel brave, but I feel like my heart is caving in.

The Hazards of the Couch →
My comment seems to truncate on Nutritionista, so I’ll just reblog this since I might ramble anyways..I’m naturally antsy and the long break from school (which for me also means break from work) has been driving me crazy. Its been cold enough to discourage me waiting for the bus to go out or to the gym, especially when my boyfriend is out of town. Therefore I’ve been spending WAY...

Bound, Day 1 Twilight
The dusty Buick hummed steadily along the desert road. The sun had already sunk behind the bluffs and the warm orange glow was beginning to fade from the sky. Twilight would soon turn to dusk, to darkness.
“Marie, I don’t think there are any motels near here,” Cliff broke the silence.
“Marie, what should we do?” Cliff glanced into the passenger seat anxiously.

Bound, Day 1
The drive to the bluffs was a long one from Laredo. There wasn’t much but scrubland after the town limits, if you were lucky maybe a gnarled tree would be holding an outpost along the road, twisting up and up toward the sun. The car’s windshield was coated with a thick layer of dust, Cliff turned the wipers on.
“You know all that does is make mud,” Marie said, rolling her...
